Question:
I was injured at work Feb. 2003. I have severe back
pain and have had one surgery already and am facing
another one. I was prescribed Prozac 20 mg a day
about a year ago. I quit taking it about 2 weeks ago
because I felt like it was causing me to feel angry,
moody and feeling rage. I took your test and feel I
may have BPD, GAD and fractured enjoyment. My injury
cost me my 22 year career as a caregiver, I now sleep
in a chair and basically have no life. I was sure
that the Prozac was causing my symptoms but I am
still having them. What should I do?
Dr. Heller's Answer:
The Prozac (fluoxetine) didn't cause your problem but
it undoubtedly made it significantly worse.
Individuals with the BPD (borderline personality
disorder), GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), and
genetic depression ("fractured enjoyment") get worse
from SSRI's like Prozac unless they are pretreated
with BuSpar (buspirone) first. Without this
pretreatment Prozac will worsen dysphoria (anxiety,
rage, depression and despair) and can cause
dissociation.
Once both the BuSpar and Prozac are successfully
taken at the correct dose the chronic worry,
unprovoked mood swings, chronic anger and
irritability, emptiness, and boredom should
disappear. The use of as needed medications is then
needed as well.
