Some cases are clearly genetic, but most aren't.
The risk can run in families but requires something
to happen for the BPD to present itself. Abuse and
head injuries are much more common causes of the BPD
than pure genetics. Untreated or undertreated ADHD
is a big cause of the BPD. Most cases of ADHD are
genetic.
If the child is protected against head injury and
abuse, and is treated for ADHD and depression if
present, the likelihood of developing the BPD is
small.
