Question:
I am 18 years of age and have been told by
my GP that I have mild depression while the
counselors I have seen (which are many)
have said it's generalized anxiety.
I suffer from panic attacks which can be at
the longest 2 weeks or even half an hour
between each episode, all physical symptoms
are there as I have read much on the
disorder but still would like to know more
as there is not much on the Obsessive side
as when I became anxious it's not just the
impending sense of doom, but I tend to
obsess about how disgusting I am, how fat I
am (weighing 58kg I don't seen the point of
this one), how useless and pathetic and
then it goes on to every bit bad about me
whether real or not.
I also have a theory that everyone I love
will leave me and never come back. I use to
cut but have not since my last partner
left, I have been on anti-depressants and
ended up hating myself more for it, the
whole thing is extremely exhausting as I am
aware that most of the things I came up
with are quiet delusional and have no
reality involved.
I don't know what to do. I have tried
counseling, medications, alternative
therapy but it's gotten to the point where
it's affecting my work (spending up to
hours in tears for no reason--but every
reason). My social life: too scared to catch a
bus, but to scared to drive, paranoia that
my loved ones actually hate me, coz if I hate
myself then everyone has to, which I take
out on family and friends and I can't seem
to control these feelings.
Please explain to me if this is what you
call anxiety and why you can be aware that
the thoughts against oneself is not real
but still believe them whole heartedly.
I would appreciate any information you
could give that could help me understand
even just a tiny bit more.
Thank you greatly.
Dr. Heller's Answer:
Haldol isn’t any stronger than Risperdal, Seroquel or
Zyprexa. When a BPD patient is successfully treated
chronically with Prozac (and commonly Tegretol) Haldol
usually works within 10 minutes with no side effects for the
vast majority. I only prescribe it for prn (as needed) use.
There were studies in the 1980's that showed its
effectiveness
(http://www.BiologicalUnhappiness.com/studies.htm
), although
it hasn’t been studied for as needed use.
It’s a terrific medication for the uses you described in
your question.
