Question:
I have an emotionally unstable personality disorder
- BPD. I would like to know your views on
"natural" treatments such as meditation,
hypotherapy (is that even safe with an actual
mind/mental disorder?) and such. When I asked my
psychiatrist he laughed at me and said they did not
work. I have tried many medications but they
didn't help much. I also hate to feel drugged and
"toxic" and I am a great believer in the natural
methods so think they could really work for
me...kind of mind over matter.
Kind regards.
Dr. Heller's Answer:
I would be thrilled if "natural" treatments worked
for the BPD, but they don't. I've seen countless
individuals who have tried St. John's Wort, MSM,
herbal therapy, Chinese medicine, acupuncture,
meditation, decades of counseling, alcohol,
marijuana, massage, crystals, hanging upside down,
deep breathing, etc. Just taking charge of your
life helps for a while, but the underlying
neurological instability remains, and the symptoms
will eventually come back. The same thing occurs
with falling in love - temporary brain chemical
changes make the BPD symptoms go away for a while.
The glial cells have to work better and the stress
induced dopamine induced dysphoria (anxiety, rage,
depression and despair) has to be stopped.
