Question:
Dr. Heller, my daughter has BPD and also
Epilepsie. She uses carbamazepine for
epilepsie. Her psychiater won't give her
medication for BPD.
My question is: is there a connection between
these 2, and is there medication in her case
for Borderline?

The problem with many epilepsy disorders is
that we can't prove that diagnosis with current
technology. This is particularly true with the
borderline disorder (BPD) and bipolar, which
are located deep in the brain. I believe
strongly that the BPD is a form of epilepsy -
nerve cells firing inappropriately and out of
control. There are studies showing abnormal
EEG tests (brain waves) in those with the BPD.

backing up the use of Prozac (fluoxetine),
Tegretol (carbamazepine) and as needed Haldol
(haloperidol) for the borderline disorder.
