Question:
I am 24, in shape, and physically
healthy I was on Geodon for 6 months and
I saw amazing results associated with
my BPD particularly when I am around
strangers I used to worry what people
thought. Unfortunately, my
blood pressure sent me
to the emergency room and I was taken
off the Geodon. My blood pressure is
normal now and I have been given
samples of Abilify from my doctor.
Could I expect the same kind of success
with this new medicine?

When I choose to prescribe an
antipsychotic medication chronically,
Abilify (aripiprazole) is the one I
choose due to its lower side effect
profile -- particularly regarding
weight. I've been disappointed with
Geodon (ziprasidone). Its
cardiovascular side effects are a
concern and its effectiveness has
overall been disappointing for BPD
treatment. I try to avoid chronic
antipsychotic use whenever possible
because of the long term risks.
Some people do well with medications
that don't work well for most -- which
is the case with you and Geodon
(ziprasidone). Hopefully, the Abilify
(aripiprazole) will work for you as
well as the Geodon (ziprasidone) but
the only way to find out it to try it.
