Question:
Hi,
I found your site online and I understand patients come from around
the world. I read you only have a few sessions with the
patient? How does this work? Thanks.
Dr. Heller's Answer:
I'm a medical doctor, not a therapist. I view the BPD as a
medical illness that has caused tremendous psychological damage.
Individuals with the BPD usually have additional psychological
problems as well. Most can't afford thousands of dollars in
counseling, DBT, etc.
First, I focus in on the medically treatable diagnoses.
Second, we go over criteria to establish the correct diagnoses.
Third, is an explanation of the diagnoses, how they interact, and
how they affect the individuals and their loved ones.
Fourth, is explaining psychosis and how it affects the life of an
individual with BPD.
Fifth, is coming up with a medication plan, including as needed medications.
Sixth, is trying to motivate the individual to seek help with counseling,
affirmations, good self help and spiritual books, and changing the way
they think.
I'd love to have a program where people could spend some time after the
medications are right to stabilize and learn new life skills as well as
to recognize dysphoria and how to treat it.
