Question:
I live in Peru. I had the opportunity
to read on your studies and investigations
(researches). The truth is that they allow me
to understand better through what my daughter
is living. She has epilepsy, polycystic ovaries,
hormonal abnormal levels, and hirsutism. Can this
picture originate Personality Borderline?
Thank you very much and that God blesses.
Dr. Heller's Answer:
The BPD (borderline personality disorder)
is a form of epilepsy (nerve cells firing
inappropriately and out of control. The area
of epilepsy is within the limbic system in
the "trapped, cornered, wounded animal"
instinct.
Rarely will an individual have the BPD from just
having epilepsy, but usually other causes are
to blame. The most common are childhood
abuse or trauma, childhood onset bipolar disorder,
untreated or undertreated ADHD (Attention deficit
hyperactive disorder) and sometimes just genetics.
I haven't seen any association with polycystic
ovary disease (PCOD) causing the BPD. Hormone
problems can cause mood swings and irritability
in both men and women, and worsen the BPD, but
they don't cause the BPD.
