QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
I hope you can help me. My daughter has Crohn’s, and has bad pains in the legs knee area. Is there any recommended remedies other than paracetamol as this does not eliminate the pain.
Look forward to hearing from you.
ANSWER:
No one really understands what causes Crohn’s disease, but it’s likely either an infection or an auto-immune response (where the body’s immune system attacks itself by mistake). Both infections and autoimmune processes can cause joint (or other) pains.
There are many medication possibilities, although side effects may limit their use. NSAIDS such as Vioxx can be helpful, as are Ultram and sometimes narcotics. Anti-epilepsy medications like Neurontin and Tegretol sometimes works. Capsaicin is a natural remedy. Hypericum - from St. John’s wort - has helped some, especially topically. Glucosamine sometimes helps with arthritis and its pain. Lidocaine patches might help. Antidepressants including Effexor and the older tricyclics can be very helpful. Combinations of any or all may be necessary as well, and sometimes combinations of lower doses can be effective to reduce side effects.
