How Does Lithium Affect the BPD?
QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
MY SISTER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BIPOLAR & HAS BEEN ON LITHIUM FOR
TEN YEARS - > SHE IS 56. I BELIEVE SHE HAS BPD INSTEAD. HOW DOES LITHIUM
AFFECT BPD?
ANSWER:
Some studies show lithium is helpful like other mood stabilizers like Tegretol and Depakote. In my experience it’s not great, and side effects can be a huge problem, especially weight gain.
Like Tegretol and Depakote, lithium can cause problems for otherwise healthy individuals. Blood tests are necessary, particularly for thyroid function, liver function and blood counts. Lithium regularly causes weight gain and other symptoms. Most patients I’ve encountered on lithium hated it.
