QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller:
Could you please send me what information you have relating to Neurontin and Panic Disorders? I have been cured by Neurontin.
ANSWER:
Neurontin has many effects neurologically and psychiatrically. Since panic disorder appears to be an inappropriately functioning area of the brain, it makes sense Neurontin would work. Panic seems to be the brain's area for responding to being choked to death kicking in inappropriately. This could mean that for some patients panic disorder may be a form of epilepsy (nerve cells firing inappropriately and out of control) as is diabetic neuropathy, the behavioral dyscontrol syndrome, BPD and likely bipolar disorder. I don't think it's a coincidence that anti-epilepsy medications are now being referred to as "mood stabilizers."
