QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
I will read the material on the Website, but next weekend I am expected to drive a van for a long distance. Lately, when I go up or down a mountain, even though there is a guard rail, I panic knowing how far down it may be.
Any suggestions? I am desperate!
ANSWER:
It appears to be a panic or phobia problem. I’d recommend you get treatment for it right away. "Biological Unhappiness" goes into them at length, but they need a combination of medication (usually a moderate SSRI dose and/or benzodiazepine like lorazepam or Xanax) and counseling.
You also need to get all your baseline diagnoses made and treated, as they may be contributing largely to your problem. The screening test I use for my patients will be of assistance to you in this regard.
