QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
I have a 13 year old son. He does have A.D.H.D. He also has an explosive temper. He has a whole host of symptoms. Peripheral Neuropathy might be one. He has tactile defensiveness, extreme low muscle tone and his handwriting is at a pre-school level, among other things. He is now currently on Ritalin. He has been on and off it for several years. He is also a non-sleeper, literally. He has major problems with temperament and easily explodes. He will scream and yell, so loud it is disturbing to everyone. He can be so charming and polite. He is extremely sensitive, yet just one wrong word from anyone and the volcano explodes. He has recently been labeled with Passive-Aggressive Disorder. Could this be correct? I would like to learn about Passive-Aggressive Disorder.
Thank You.
ANSWER:
There's much more going on than the passive aggressive disorder. The mood swings
and rages are very disturbing. The BPD and/or childhood onset bipolar disorder
need to be considered.
He also has some neurological deficits that must be addressed. A thorough neurological
evaluation needs to be done. I'd make certain his thyroid and B12 levels are normal
as well.
