Does Prozac cause inaccurate pregnancy tests?

    QUESTION:

    Dear Dr. Heller,

Two questions if you don't mind please.

I am two weeks late on my menstrual cycle, which I never miss more than one day.  I have taken two at home urine tests and one blood test at the OB/GYN's office.  Is is at all possible that the Prozac could be giving false results?  Or could it be that the Prozac is keeping me from having a menstrual cycle?  I have been on the Prozac for a week and a half now, I'd been on Celexa before that.

Can it be dangerous to get pregnant while taking Prozac?  My husband and I would like to keep trying to get pregnant.  Can Prozac lessen our chances of getting pregnant?

Your response would be much appreciated.

    ANSWER:

    1. It's highly unlikely Prozac is causing a false result.  I've never encountered anything on this phenomenon, although anything is possible.
    2. Prozac is considered safe in pregnancy, but it's an issue that needs to be discussed with the physicians involved.
    3. Prozac doesn't lessen your chances of pregnancy, although depression can reduce your chances of getting pregnant.
