QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
Re : Anti epileptic drugs
I'm have BPD and I'm living in Europe (Belgium). I noticed you use anti-epileptic medications for BPD people. I've also been diagnosed with restless syndrome and take Rivotril for that. It's quite interesting to note that I noticed an amelioration (slight) being under Rivotril, despite the fact that Rivotril was not at all involved with my BPD treatment. Just a coincidence.
ANSWER:
Rivotril is clonazepam (Klonopin). It's a benzodiazepine that reduces anxiety.
Individuals with the BPD do poorly with high levels of anxiety, and this medication is
reducing that anxiety.
It is addicting, and there are potential concerns about worsening the severity of
behavioral deterioration.
