QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
Recently I’ve heard of SAD ( social anxiety disorder ). Can you tell me something about this disorder or direct me where I could find more info on it? I think I may have this disorder.
Thanks!
ANSWER:
Also referred to as "social phobia" - it’s an excessive fear when dealing with other members of one’s species that causes a change from normal behavior.
Sometimes it’s genetic, sometimes a result of underlying diagnoses such as depression or the generalized anxiety disorder, sometimes a phobia, etc.
Treatment is directed at both the social phobia and the underlying conditions. My screening test may help you discover what underlying conditions may be present. Medication and brain retraining (usually with professional counseling as well as other methods) is usually required.
