QUESTION:
Hello,
I am writing you because I am confused about my brother... he lies all the time even over things which make the least bit of sense.. he is 24 yrs. old and has been lying since he was young but it has made a mess of his life and a mess for other people whom he has lied about. He also talks of suicide and "ending it all", he has talked about killing himself a lot for some years.. this is very disturbing to me and sometimes I wonder if he enjoys upsetting me and wants some type of attention like a child that wants to be missed immensely.
I am so confused and worried, I usually try and tell him how lucky he really is, but he only hears himself. He does have low self esteem and I think that is why he lies, but the lying goes deep and the talk of suicide scares me.
Any Input...I would sure appreciate!
ANSWER:
Whenever I hear this story I immediately look for Attention Deficit Disorder and the BPD.
I’d highly recommend reviewing the screening test I use for my patients.
The back cover of "Biological Unhappiness" at http://www.BiologicalUnhappiness.com/ lists many of the symptoms that he might instantly recognize. If he has the BPD, the front cover of "Life at the Border" will undoubtedly be of great use to him. He has to want help, and many people have recognized help was available by reading these covers.
