What do you think of Topamax instead of Depakote?

Dr. Heller,

I have been on Depakote with good results as far as keeping mood swings in control, but the weight gain and other side effects are unbearable.

I recently have tried Topamax and feel out of it and depressed.  Have you had good results with this drug?  I know it takes months to wean into your system, but then do the symptoms subside?  Thank you for your input.

ANSWER:

I've been frustrated with Topamax.  Virtually everyone I've prescribed it to felt ill and couldn't tolerate it.

Depakote can cause weight gain.  If you have bipolar, Tegretol is a good option, as is Neurontin.
