QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
Can Zoloft cause hyperactivity (not mania) when it is prescribed (100 mg/day) to someone with a diagnosis of Bipolar I? Why does the hyperactivity only last for about 3 hours after they take it?
Thanks.
ANSWER:
Zoloft can activate the generalized anxiety disorder and make it worse, however it will
not make "hyperactivity" worse.
While some people may have an "idiosyncratic reaction" (responding differently
from others), what you're describing doesn't seem to be a Zoloft reaction. It is
most likely an activation of bipolar. Bipolar III is triggered by medications.
