What Can I Do For My Hives?
QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
What are some treatments I could use on hives? I've been getting them almost everyday for longer than a year.
ANSWER:
Hives are generally from an allergic reaction or from "nerves" - or both.
The possibility of a persistent allergic reaction needs to be investigated, usually by an
allergist. Removing medications, vitamins and herbs is usually a first step.
Medications for hives can include antihistamines, short term use of steroid medications
like prednisone, medications that block stomach acid (they block the H2 histamine
receptor), steroid creams, and anti-itch medications like Vistaril.
The
screening test I use for my patients can give clues
regarding mental health diagnoses.
