Q. Hi. I was diagnosed with BPD not long ago, but have been on meds for a long time. I take the following meds:

150mg Effexor XR (morning)
20mg Buspar (morning and night)
75mg Effexor XR (night)
10mg Prozac (night)

I have recently had problems with muscle spasms at night while trying to go to sleep. Is this sort of thing normal for most people, or could it be a medication side effect?

I am not sure whether or not I should complain to my psychiatrist.

Other meds that I have been on include Paxil, Naltrexone, Effexor, and Zoloft.

I have been taking my current meds for almost a year, but the morning dosage of Effexor XR was doubled about a month or so ago due to a recent hospitalization.

Thank you for your web site and the effort you put into it. I have found it very helpful.

P.S. It might help to know that I am a 15 year old female.

A. There are many possible reasons for muscle spasms. It's highly unlikely the medication is causing it. Many people respond to balanced stretching, warm soaks, etc. Sometimes something medical is wrong, such as anemia or thyroid disorders. It's a good idea to discuss it with your physician.
