Q. Have two questions,
A therapist I know (not the one I see professionally) suggested I go to a Dialectical Behavior Therapy Clinic, what is DBT?
I've been taking St. John's Wort and recently started taking Hydroxtrytophan (5-HTP) as a serotonin inhibitor. Have you ever heard of taking 5-HTP for BPD? I take no other meds.
A. Dr. Linehan's work on DBT is a very comprehensive system of treating individuals with the BPD. It requires multiple therapists who work together as a team, and a very committed group of patients and therapists. DBT has been shown in a scientific study to reduce suicidal attempts and self-mutilation by ~ 50%.
Unfortunately I've never seen St. Johns Wort or other herbal medications work for the BPD.
In my opinion, the BPD is a medical problem that needs medical solutions. I believe it's a form of epilepsy - brain cells firing inappropriately and out of control. All the diagnoses need to be correctly made and treated to be successful.
