Q. I have a question about Zoloft. I was on it for three years and recently developed a side effect that was attributed to the medication, although it hasn't been proven conclusively or disproven, really.

I have pronounced edema in my toes, feet, ankles, and lower legs. I can't even wear shoes and there is a great deal of pain and discomfort. Testing (CT scan, ultra sounds) ruled out a few theories about the cause and I have blood drawn as well. Plus the doc said that edema is a lesser known side effect of Zoloft and I was instructed to remain medication free for two weeks, which I have done.

My tests were all clear and my BP is normal. Need I be concerned about finding out the cause of the edema or should I simply concern myself with alleviating the symptoms?

A. If it's the Zoloft, staying off it and then trying it again should give you that answer. If that isn't the cause, other possible explanations need to be made, including kidney and heart problems.
