QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
I'm so glad to find your website. I intend to order your book Biological Unhappiness today.
I have been taking Prosac for about the past year. I think I fall into the "fractured enjoyment" category. I have felt not quite happy but not really unhappy for as long as I can remember (I am 53). The Prozac seems to make life in general easier to deal with - I'm not so frustrated or irritated so easily.
The problem: I also have a low sex drive and am tired a lot. I don't know that this is related to the Prozac because I've pretty much always been this way. My GYN switched me to Wellbutrin 150 twice a day about four months ago. For a short time I felt like I had more energy but the past couple of months I've felt agitated or irritated much too often. My doctor added Xanax at a very low dose twice a day. I guess it helps some but I'm not sure I have any advantage with the Wellbutrin. More pills, sex drive no better, energy still low. I'm thinking about going back on the Prozac.
What do you think? I was taking 20mg per day.
Please reply.
ANSWER:
There are many explanations for your symptoms, such as low B12, low testosterone, low
estrogen, non primary hypothyroidism. There is an
arginine
based cream
that can improve sexual responsiveness.
Prozac is the only medication that works for "fractured enjoyment" - which years
ago was referred to as the "depressed personality." Wellbutrin can help with the
lack of orgasms that come from SSRI's like Prozac.
Getting all your medically treatable diagnoses made and treated is key. My
screening test
may be of help.
