QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
I like Paxil for depression and anxiety, but now I can't achieve orgasm (2 weeks at 20mg per day). Do you have any recommendation to counteract this?
Thanks much.
ANSWER:
If the cognitive generalized anxiety disorder (persistent worry) is present, the
medication BuSpar may be necessary to reduce that anxiety to allow orgasms. High anxiety
can prevent orgasms, even though intense acute fear can cause involuntary orgasms in men.
There are medications that can help with orgasms. Ginkgo has been shown to work in high
doses (200-240mg daily). The antidepressant Wellbutrin can be added to restore balance in
the serotonin/dopamine/noradrenaline system.
