Will I Have To Take Zoloft For The Rest Of My Life?

QUESTION:

Dear Dr. Heller,

I take 50 mg of Zoloft daily for depression.  I was wondering if I will have to take these for the rest of my life or will I eventually be able to stop taking them?

ANSWER:

Only 40% of those suffering from a major depression are able to take an antidepressant once and not suffer a relapse.  60% will get at least a 2nd episode.  Some day you and your physician will have to decide what you want to do in this regard.  It is unpredictable.
