QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
My child is on a monthly cycle. his Depakote is monitored monthly by a blood test that measures valproic acid. When deemed "too low" the depakote level is increased. This does not always align with what seems to be his cycle. What kind of medical doctor can specifically monitor his blood chemistry to keep healthy levels where they need to be? I believe that this child's peace is closely related to his body chemistry being maintained at normal levels. Currently his monthly medical visits with his psychiatrist has not worked effectively.
ANSWER:
If he is unstable during the day, multiple levels during the day can be performed. Peak
and trough levels can be done.
A psychiatrist, Family Physician or Internist can handle getting the blood tests
performed.
If his levels are good and he's still cycling, he will either need a change in
medication or a combination.
