DSM
IV Criteria Bipolar I Disorder
Note: The fundamental criteria is MANIA or HYPOMANIA, which may or may not be mixed with depression. Bipolar I is divided into different categories and diagnostic codes:
1) Single Manic Episode (only one Manic Episode and no past Major Depressive Episodes)
2) Most Recent Episode Hypomanic (Currently or most recently in a Hypomanic Episode, and there has previously been at least one Manic Episode or Mixed Episode) *
3) Most Recent Episode Manic (Currently or most recently in a Manic Episode, and there has previously been at least one Major Depressive Episode, Manic Episode, or Mixed Episode)
4) Most Recent Episode Mixed (Currently or most recently in a Mixed Episode and there has previously been at least one Major Depressive Episode, Manic Episode, or Mixed Episode)
5) Most Recent Episode Depressed (Currently or most recently in a Major Depressive Episode and there has previously been at least one Manic Episode)
Note: Recurrence is defined as either a change in polarity from depression or an interval of at least two months without manic symptoms
All categories have the following disclaimer: "...not better accounted for by Schizoaffective Disorder and is not superimposed on Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform Disorder, Delusional Disorder, or Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified."
* The mood symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
Note: there are additional ways of coding for billing and diagnostic features such as severity and additional symptoms, but the fundamental diagnostic criteria for Bipolar remain the same.
