BuSpar and Grapefruit Juice

BuSpar is a fantastic medication for stopping persistent worry and allowing many individuals to take antidepressants like Prozac and psychostimulants like Ritalin.    Some people require extremely small doses and move up gradually.

A recent report in the "People’s Pharmacy" syndicated newspaper column by Joe and Dr. Teresa Graedon stated that grapefruit can increase blood levels of BuSpar by 4-9 times. That means a 15mg dose is the equivalent of 60-135mg if you take grapefruit juice also! This may be a reason many individuals have difficulty with grapefruit juice. It doesn’t matter what time of day you take grapefruit juice.

There are many reports of drug interactions with grapefruit juice, and some preliminary work indicates it may be bad for you.

Joe and Teresa Graedon (www.peoplespharmacy.com) have offered to send their "Guides to Drug, Food and Grapefruit interactions" for $2.00 in check or money order and a long (No.10), stamped, self addressed envelope. Send the envelope and payment to Graedon’s People’s Pharmacy, No. FJ-140, PO Box 52027, Durham, NC 27717-2027)
